Drive on the right, overtake on the left. At roundabouts give way to traffic already circling. Seatbelts are compulsory for everyone.
Towns 40 km/h, open roads 80 km/h, motorways 110 km/h. Fixed cameras sit on every main route. Fines are payable on the spot in cash.
The Tirana-Durres motorway is excellent. Coastal roads are well-surfaced. Mountain tracks to Theth and Valbona are steep and unpaved -- 4x4 only.
Petrol stations are plentiful in lowland areas. In the mountains, fill up before you climb. Both 95-octane petrol and diesel are widely available. Expect roughly 1.80-2.00 EUR/litre.
The legal limit is 0.01% BAC -- effectively zero tolerance. Fines are steep and licence confiscation is possible. Leave the wine for dinner, not the drive.
Dipped headlights are required at all times, day and night. Mobile phone use while driving is banned -- hands-free only.

Albanian Alps via Shkodra. Rough roads, 5-6 hrs from Tirana. Stunning alpine scenery, serious hiking. 4x4 mandatory. Jun-Sep only.
Two highlights in one loop from Sarande. Natural spring Blue Eye + UNESCO stone fortress city. 200 km round trip. Paved roads, any car.
Pogradec and the Albanian shore of Ohrid. Option to cross into North Macedonia (check policy). Serene lakeside drive, 3-4 hrs from Tirana.
